No Scripts Allowed: The Secret To Making Videos!

how to record a video

I hate scripts.

I remember when I was an actress (albeit no Angelina Jolie – RHOC reference;) I hated scripts.

I spent so much time in my head trying to remember the wording that I lacked all emotion. It’s no wonder, I’m no Angelina Jolie!

It was only after I started competing in beauty pageants with a vengeance, did I learn how to express myself.

No I didn’t win and become Miss USA as I had dreamed as a kid. But I did learn tons about how to present my thoughts succinctly.

Part of pageant prep is to conjure up answers for more than 200 questions that could potentially be asked at any given time.

Instead of writing a script for over 200 questions and trying to memorize them, the secret was to jot down your key speaking points.

Do you have to memorize your speaking points. Yes.

Not verbatim. But you have to remember the key points that you want to make.

So what’s that have to do with video lady?

Entrepreneurs are not actors. If you try to present your script to the camera, you may come across as stiff and boring.

The reason why my videos have life – none of my past clients use a script.

See I believe entrepreneurs already know all the answers to the questions their target market wants to know.

Granted, they may not know how to express it succinctly, but that’s where I come in.

I ask questions so that you get your point out. I help you say it in a compelling way that speaks to your audience.

Show Me An Example Woman!

Here’s one of my latest shoots with Alethea Cheng Fitzpatrick of PhotoSanity.

She came over to do my failed webshow and got an About Me video too.

Here’s what she wrote about her experience:

“She is warm, fun and generous, and made the process SOOOOOO easy. I had about 3 hours sleep and did zero preparation for this video and I’m already getting compliments and opt-ins from my list (yes, people who already opted in are opting in again because of the video!)”

The answers were already inside of her with zero prep. She just need a little coaxing to get them out in a succinct, compelling way.

If you’d like an About Me video for your website please email me at to discuss your lead generating video.

Jalanda, this was a lovely video…and, no prep? I usually write out an outline or something because I freeze when the I hit the “on” button. So, how do you organize your thoughts? And, how do you know that good is good enough? Love these tips.
